How does Botox® work?

Botox® injections are a type of facial rejuvenation treatment that helps to reduce the signs of aging and improve the appearance of the skin. It is a prescription injectable that is injected into the muscles and used to temporarily improve the look of both moderate to severe crows feet, lines, and frown lines between the eyebrows. The serum used in Botox® injections is derived from a neurotoxin that paralyzes the muscles that lie beneath the surface of the skin. As the muscles begin to relax, wrinkles and fine lines begin to disappear. The results of the treatment will be fully visible within two to ten days after the injection is received. The skin will appear smoother and more elastic creating a more youthful and vibrant look. Botox® is minimally invasive and can be safely used by almost anyone who is looking to counter the most common signs of aging.

How long will a Botox® injection last?

Botox® injections offer results that last anywhere from three to six months. Each person will have different experiences with the treatment due to the unique tone and texture of the tissues in their face. A person with relatively healthy skin and few wrinkles may have longer lasting results, while a person with poor skin tone may have results that last less than three months. It is important to discuss the procedure with a qualified dermatologist so the patient knows the risks and understands what the treatment is fully capable of. If the patient is expecting longer lasting results, they may have more success with dermal fillers. Each person's case is unique and will be treated as such.

Does Botox® have side effects?

Botox® will cause different reactions in different people, depending on their tolerance for the neurotoxin matrix that is used to create the serum. While some people may show no side effects at all, others may experience irritation and redness near the injection site. The area may be slightly discolored for the first few days after the procedure. The area being treated may also be slightly tender to the touch for the first few days after the treatment. If a person experiences any type of side effect or physical reaction, they should immediately report them to the dermatologist who provided the service.
