Are lasers an effective treatment option for acne?

Advancements in laser technology have made it an invaluable tool when it comes to treating acne and other blemishes found on the skin. Lasers can effectively reduce the appearance of acne and the scars it produces. Using pulse-based light technology, the skin can be resurfaced allowing fresh, unblemished skin to appear. Laser skin resurfacing is mildly invasive due to the fact that it disrupts the top layer of skin, causing it shed. As the old skin dries up and begins to peel off, the skin underneath is fresh, smooth, and free of blemishes and imperfections. The treatment takes less than an hour and healing time ranges from one to two weeks, depending on the patient.

Is acne caused by poor hygiene?

Contrary to what many people thought in the past, acne is not caused by poor hygiene. Poor hygiene can irritate the situation, however. Acne has many different causes. One of the most common causes, especially with teenagers and young adults is hormonal imbalances. During adolescence, hormones are running rampant causing physical changes within the body. This can result in acne outbreaks and hair growth in several areas of the body. Acne outbreaks can also be attributed to certain types of medications and exposure to certain types of chemicals and contaminants found in the environment.

Can acne be prevented?

Even though there are many different cleansers and exfoliants on the market, there will be times when acne is not preventable. Keeping the skin clean and properly moisturized will help to control the seriousness of the outbreaks, but they may not fully prevent them. Once a patient has been evaluated and the cause of their acne is identified, the doctor can develop a treatment plan that will help the patient reduce their exposure to potential triggers. While this may not completely prevent an acne outbreak, it will help to reduce their severity if and when they occur. Taking proper care of the skin will also help to control oils and dirt that can often build up on the surface of the skin causing irritation.
